What is a YouTube outlier?
An outlier is a video that did much better than normal for the channel that posted it. You measure it with a simple ratio:
Outlier score = the video's views ÷ the channel's usual views
If a channel usually gets 40,000 views per video and one video has 480,000, that video scores 12×. It got twelve times the channel's normal reach. (That channel is a made-up example.)
The score is useful because it takes the channel's size out of the picture. A 12× video on a 40,000-view channel and a 12× video on a 4 million-view channel tell you the same thing: the topic, title or thumbnail did something the channel's other videos didn't.
Why outliers beat sorting by views
Sorting a channel by views shows its biggest videos. That has three problems for research:
- Old videos win. A video from five years ago has had five years to collect views. The top of a views sort is often a channel's history, not what works now.
- Big channels win. If you compare channels, a views list is just a list of the largest ones. A small channel's 12× breakout sits below a large channel's ordinary upload.
- Views don't say "unusual". 500,000 views is a flop for some channels and a record for others. Only the ratio tells you which.
An outlier sort fixes all three. It ranks each video against its own channel, so a small channel's breakout can come first, and you see ideas that worked beyond the channel's usual audience. Those are the ideas most likely to work for you too.
How SortViral works out "usual"
The baseline matters more than the multiple. If "usual" includes a channel's best video or a video from yesterday, every score is wrong.
SortViral uses the median views of the channel's 30 most recent videos. It leaves out:
- Pinned videos, which a creator chose to promote, so they're not a normal upload.
- Videos under 3 days old, which haven't finished collecting views.
The median, not the average, keeps one huge hit from raising the bar for every other video. And every score shows its baseline, for example "12× · median of 30", so you can see how many videos it compares against. A score built on 4 videos deserves less trust than one built on 30, and you can tell which is which.
How to find outliers on a YouTube channel
- Install SortViral in Chrome on a computer. It's free, with no sign-up and no card.
- Open a channel and go to its Videos tab (or its Shorts tab). A bar appears above the grid.
- Click Outlier. The grid re-sorts in place, highest score first. The rest of the channel loads in the background, so you don't scroll and the page doesn't move.
- Hover a video to see its views, its outlier score and the other numbers YouTube shows for it.
- Click a video to open it in the player. Read the transcript beside it, and use ← and → to move to the next outlier.
The other chips in the bar are Newest, Views and Rising, plus engagement. Rising sorts by views per day for videos under 30 days old. Use it to catch a video that is breaking out this week before its total catches up.

Add to Chrome, freeReading outliers: transcripts in the player
Knowing which video broke out is half the job. The other half is working out why. Most of the answer is in the title, the thumbnail and the first 30 seconds.
The SortViral player shows the transcript next to the video. Open the top outlier, read its opening, press →, and read the next one. After five or six you usually see a pattern: the same kind of promise in the first line, the same topic, the same format.
To go further:
- Formats groups a channel's videos into formats and ranks them by median outlier, so you see which kind of video works best on that channel. It uses Chrome's built-in AI, on recent computers.
- Copy for AI copies the top videos with their numbers so you can paste them into an AI assistant and ask what they have in common. SortViral can also connect directly to Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and Windsurf.
- CSV export gives you the full list for a spreadsheet.
Track outliers across many channels
One channel tells you what works for one creator. A niche needs ten or twenty.
Save channels to your Watchlist, then scan them all at once for the biggest outliers in a date range, for example the last 30 days. You get one list of breakout videos across your niche instead of opening each channel. Bookmarks keep single videos you want to come back to.
SortViral only reads what you can already see on YouTube. It waits about a second between requests, stops when a site shows a limit, and never likes, follows, posts or downloads.
Outliers on TikTok and Instagram
The same score works on short-form platforms, where most people call it "most viewed" or "viral" rather than "outlier". See how to find the most viewed TikTok on any profile, or sort TikTok by views. SortViral also works on Instagram, Facebook Reels tabs and Pinterest.
Frequently asked questions
What is a YouTube outlier?
A video that got many more views than its channel usually gets. The outlier score is the video's views divided by the channel's usual views; 5× means five times the normal.
How does SortViral calculate a channel's usual views?
It takes the median views of the channel's 30 most recent videos, leaving out pinned videos and videos under 3 days old. Each score shows the baseline it used.
Does it work on YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Open the channel's Shorts tab and click Outlier. The grid re-sorts the same way it does on the Videos tab.
Is this a YouTube outlier finder for all of YouTube?
No. SortViral works on the channels you open, on their Videos and Shorts tabs. Use the Watchlist to scan many channels at once.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no post limit, no sign-up and no card.
